Construction Materials and Sustainability

Construction Materials and Sustainability

EDRF & HM Government

Due to increasing environmental concerns, the depletion of non-renewable resources used in manufacturing building materials, and the increasing costs of living, the construction sector is seeking a more sustainable future.

Join us as we discuss some of the principles of sustainable construction, including designing for disassembly and adaptability – the ability of a building’s material and components to be disassembled and reused, or rearranged, after the initial design life. We will also look at the greater use of natural materials, both mineral and bio-based, to offer opportunities for more affordable and sustainable materials and products.

We’ll be joined by Professor Pete Walker, Centre in Innovation Construction Materials, Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment, and Professor at the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, who will give a keynote talk. Pete Walker has led many research projects developing innovation in environmentally friendly construction.

A panel discussion will follow where we’ll meet companies who are innovating with alternative sustainable materials or processes in construction.

Professor Pete Walker, Director, Centre in Innovative Construction Materials

Dept. Architecture & Civil Engineering, University of Bath. Professor Walker is a chartered civil engineer. His current research interests include bio-based construction materials, centred on the development of low carbon technologies suitable for new and retrofitting applications. Since working at Bath, Pete Walker has also led research projects developing straw bale construction, hemp-lime construction, and innovative timber engineering.

Jeff Ive, Technical Director, Adaptavate

Prior to joining Adaptavate, Jeff worked at the National Composite Centre (NCC) for several years leading a team delivering innovation across many sectors, from automotive to aerospace, marine to renewable energies. Adaptavate is an award-winning company rethinking and redesigning the way building materials are produced, used and disposed of. Innovating and designing low-carbon construction products for healthy buildings and inhabitants, Jeff has many years experience of materials research and is head of the technical team at Adaptavate. Jeff is a visiting research fellow at the Centre for Innovation Construction Materials and a visiting lecturer at the University of Bath and the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Valentina Dipietro, Mykor

Valentina Dipietro is an award-winning material designer, lecturer at the University of Creative Arts and Glasgow School of Art and former researcher at Green Lab and Kyoto Design Lab. She is a Co-Founder of Mykor, a biotechnology and advanced materials company developing commercially viable and sustainable building materials made from waste and fungi.

Dr Hector Archila, Founder & CEO, Amphibia BASE Ltd

Senior Lecturer at the University of England in Bristol and Founder of Amphibia BASE Ltd. Amphibia BASE Ltd is a UK technology-based company upgrading locally grown low-grade timber with proprietary high strength bamboo products. Hector is a professional architect, researcher and entrepreneur with an industrial and research background in architecture, material science and structural engineering. Alongside his commercial and academic activities, Hector participates actively in scientific, advisory and standardisation committees at ISO, the Natural Materials Association and the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR).

Linda Farrow, Agile Homes

Linda Farrow is Director and co-founder of Agile Homes, with lead responsibility for people and culture. The Agile team designs and delivers high-quality, low carbon, affordable homes and places of work and learning. We apply circular thinking to our panelised construction systems, maximising use of renewable, carbon-capturing materials and seeking to design out non-renewables. Now three-years old and post-revenue, Agile is growing via a reseller network, focussing on solutions for safe, civil space as an essential ingredient for a climate-secure society.
